Mastering Checkers Basics

Whether you’re a complete beginner or simply want to enhance your gameplay, the first step toward becoming a better player is ensuring that you’ve nailed the basics. This means that you should understand both the objective of the game and how to actually play it.

OBJECTIVE.

When playing Checkers, your goal is to remove the other player's checkers from the board by ‘capturing’ them. You capture a checker by jumping over it, meaning that you have to line up your checker in a diagonally adjacent spot and move to the diagonal space beyond your opponent’s checker.

HOW TO PLAY CHECKERS ONLINE.

247 Checkers follows the same rules as conventional checkers!

  1. Both players start at opposing sides of the board, with twelve checkers, each arranged into three rows. You will automatically be assigned the black checkers, but you can change this in the settings.
  2. When it is your turn, you can begin to move your checkers across the board. To begin with, checkers can only move forward to an unoccupied, diagonally adjacent square. Your options will be highlighted in green.
  3. If you’re in a position to capture a player's peice, your options will be highlighted in red.
  4. If you move a peice across the board to your opponent’s Kings row (the furthest row from your starting point), the checker becomes a King. This means that it can move diagonally in any direction.
  5. The game ends when one player has captured all of their opponent's checkers.

If, when playing 247 Checkers, you’re unsure which move is the most advantageous, you can click the lightbulb button on the left-hand side of the screen. This will highlight which position you should consider moving your checker to - though this will add sixty seconds to your time.

Developing a Winning Strategy

Checkers is primarily a game of strategy. This means that every move you make across the board should be calculated! Fortunately, there are many tips and tricks that you can follow to make it easier to develop an effective strategy.

Tips and Tricks for Checkers

  • Take control of the center of the board. By clustering your checkers together in the center of the board, you are limiting your opponent's potential movements while also making it more difficult for them to capture your checkers.
  • Keep your checkers close together. Keeping your checkers close together means that you can block your opponent's chances of capturing your checkers. This is because they cannot jump over two checkers at once.
  • Turn your checkers into kings quickly. As mentioned above, you can turn your checkers into Kings by reaching your opponent’s Kings row. This is something you should aim to do as quickly as possible, as you’ll then have a lot more freedom when it comes to moving around the board.
  • Move your kings to the center. While it's advantageous to have any of your checkers in central positions, you should move your Kings to this spot as quickly as possible. After all, if your Kings are pushed to the sidelines, you are not able to make the best use of them.

Beating Your Opponent in Checkers

You beat your opponent in Checkers by removing all their checkers from their board. However, there’s no guaranteed way to secure a victory, as it's impossible to know ahead of time what strategy your opponent will follow or the moves they will make.

You can, however, try out a range of different strategies. For example, you should keep in mind that not every move will allow you to capture a checker, but they could force your opponent to move to a less-than-desirable position as a result of this. This will leave them more vulnerable as the game goes on, especially if you make this your primary tactic during gameplay.

You can also protect your own best interests by keeping your checkers together as much as possible, avoiding leaving gaps between them where your opponent can jump in.

Improving Your Checkers Gameplay

The easiest way to improve your checker's gameplay (aside from familiarizing yourself with the rules and objectives) is to play more checkers! After all, you’ll develop new skills every time you play, which will make it easier for you to develop a signature strategy that will carry you toward success!

Remember, you can access 247 Checker at any time from any device, provided that you have an internet connection. This means that you can improve your gameplay anytime, anywhere!

Strategies for Checkers Success

As outlined above, there are many strategies that you can use to succeed when playing checkers online.

  • Attempt to turn your standard checkers (sometimes referred to as Men) into Kings as quickly as possible, increasing your options and mobility.
  • Take control of the center of the checker's board so that you do not limit your options.
  • Block your opponent where possible by keeping your checkers clustered together.

Dominating the Checkers Board

Dominating the checkers board (such as by taking control of the central tiles) is one of the easiest ways to set yourself up for success when playing checkers. However, it can sometimes be difficult to determine which is the optimal move independently - which is where we come in.

Whenever you select a checker, any of the tiles that you can jump to are highlighted automatically. For example, any vacant tiles will be highlighted in green, and any of those that will allow you to capture an opponent in red!
